To discover this region properly you really have to spend at least two dat in it. You can moor your boat at the Saint-Thibault branch, which affords excellent facilitie, whitch an information office and drinking water and fuel supplies.
You can use the facilities of the Saint-Satur camp site(showers, golf course, seven tennis courts, a 3-basin swimming pool), not to mention a greatness natural lake formed by the river Loire.
Using this port as a base, you can visit:
- Sancerre: little town with narrow winding streets, built on a hill overlooking Saint-Satur and Saint-Thibault. Sancerre is internationaly famous for its delicious wine and its goat's cheese (Crotin de Chavignol). the village of Chavignol is situated just a few kilometers to the north-west of Sancerre.
Sight to see:
- the Stronghold Tower ( Tour des Fiefs ): this is all that remains of the 14th century Château of Counts of Sancerre. If you climb the 200 steps or so to get to the top of the tower, you will be rewarded by a superb panorama of the Loire Valley and hills of the Sancerre region.
- The walk from Caesar's Door: this affords a beautiful view over the vineyads and surrounding area.
- Saint-Satur: the church of St Peter, a former abbey built on the site of a 12th century monastery is well worth visiting.
You must taste some of the culinary specialities of the region, such as the "matelote d'anguille" ( celt ), chicken fricassee, and "Tatin" tart., washed down with a glass of Sancerre wine.
Guided tours of the Sancerre vineyards and wine cellars are organized by the pays d'accueil-Fort-Sancerroi-Val de Loire in collaboration with the Sancerre Wine Producer's Union.
