Tourism:
Built along the right bank of the River Loire, Nevers is the capital of the Nivernais region. Its nickname is due to the "pointed town" to the many church towers which are above the roof . You can visit two area: the upper town, with the imposing Cathedral of Saint-cyr and Sainte-Juliette in its centre, and the lawer town with the remarkable Church of Saint-Etienne.
The high town ( around the cathedral):
- The Ducal ( Palais Ducal): This beautiful 16th century building, The former house of the Duke of Nevers now the courthouse the law .
- The Cathedral of St-Cyr and Ste-Juliette: situaded at the top of the high town, this cathedral displays all the architectural styles from the 10th trough to the 16th century. Excavation inside the palace have revealed a 6th century baptisteryand 12th century tombs. You cansee a beautiful12th century fresco on the walls of the Romanesque apse. The cathedral suffered severe damage during the 1944 bombing.
- The Porte du Croux: this is one of the last remnants of the town's fortifications.It was built in the 14th century and now houses the museum or archaology ( Open in summer from 14h30 to 18h00, every day except Tuesday).
- The municipal Museum Fréddéric Blandin: this museum houses a fin collection of Nevers pottery, showing the development of the craft since the end of the 16th century (Open from 10h-12h and 14h-17h, every day except Tuesday, entrance at 16 rue St-genest).
The low town:
- Church of Saint-Etienne: situated near the rue du Commerce, Nevers main street. Fonded in 1097, this church is a remakable example of pure Romanesque architecture.
- Ste-Marie Chapel: the Louis XIII style facade is covered with Italian-type ornementation.
- The Porte de Paris ( Paris Gateway): this 18th centuury triumphal arch was built to commemorate the victory of the Battle of Fontenay.
- The 15th century belfry.
- The Covent of St-Gildard: The Body of Bernadette Soubirous, canonized in 1933, is conserved here. Each year some 500,000 people make the pilgrimage to Sainte Bernadette.
Nevers is also the home of nougatine, a delicious sponge cake pastry stuffed with praline-flvoured cream and iced with chocolate.
And for the cinema-lovers, it is in Nevers that Alain resnais and Marguerite Duras the film Hiroshima mon amour.
